Summary

In Ashley J. Bohrer’s Chapter 27 of From the River to the Sea, the larger Zionism the movement must not overlook: there are many more secular and Christian Zionists in the world than Jewish ones, and Christian Zionism is expanding in the US evangelical movement and in Brazil, South Korea and Nigeria (From the River to the Sea: Essays for a Free Palestine, lines 2167-2173).

Details

  • Christian Zionism is not new — one Israeli scholar suggests Jewish Zionism actually has its roots in it — and it is often both anti-Semitic and Islamophobic and well entrenched in right-wing formations, including anti-feminist and anti-queer revanchism (lines 2169-2171).
  • Prominent Zionist organizations have cozied up to the far right: on 14 November 2023 a coalition of pro-Israel organizations organized a “March for Israel” in Washington DC and invited pastor John Hagee, who once said that God had sent Hitler, to speak from the podium (lines 2139-2143).
  • The creation of the State of Israel and its continued regime is predominantly supported by states and organizations that are overwhelmingly Christian; it was the British Balfour Declaration and acts by the United Nations that created the state in the first place (lines 2171-2173).
