Summary
Local commander of poor peasant origin in the second phase of the 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, whose killing in March 1939 Kanafani calls a crushing blow to the revolt.
Details
- In the period after the revolt’s leadership moved outside Palestine, Abd al-Rahim al-Hajj emerged as a local commander, and the Communists said they were in contact with him and supplied him with information (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.25 / printed p.48).
- Kanafani presents the local commands of this period as closely linked with the peasants, but organisationally tied to, and partly financed by, the Central Committee for Struggle (Jihad) in Damascus (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.25 / printed p.49).
- His killing in March 1939 deprived the revolt, in Kanafani’s words, of one of the bravest, wisest and most honest of the popular revolutionary leaders, after which the local commands started to collapse and leave the field (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.26 / printed p.51).
