Summary

Palestinian Arab nationalist commander (1907–1948, in the editors’ note) who led the Army of the Holy War from January 1948 and was killed reconnoitring Qastal Hill in fog in the early hours of 8 April 1948 (‘The House of the Priest’: A Palestinian Life (1885-1954), PDF p.172, note 146).

Details

  • Niqula Khoury met him, with Father Ibrahim Ayyad, in Birzeit in the winter of 1947-48, and in Damascus in March 1948 he stood at the head of the leaders who had demanded weapons and ammunition before Khoury (PDF p.171).
  • Visiting Khoury’s Damascus hotel with two young men of the Al-Rihawi family, he said Khoury would have a place in his tent, but that for the battlefield he would replace him as long as supplies of weapons could be got; two days later Khoury heard of his death and of Deir Yassin (PDF p.172-173).
  • Khoury dates the collapse of Arab resistance in Palestine from his death, the same day as the taking of Deir Yassin (PDF p.174).
