Summary
The author of The Land Issue in Palestine, cited in the Peel Commission Report for the Jewish Agency experts’ figures on Palestine’s cultivable area (Report of the Palestine Royal Commission, PDF p.246 / printed p.235).
Details
- The Report states, from Granovsky’s book, that figures arrived at by the Jewish Agency experts show the cultivable area of Palestine comprises, exclusive of the Beersheba Sub-District, 9,197,000 dunums, divided as follows: in the plains, 3,876,650 dunums; in the hill and mountain districts, 5,320,350 dunums (PDF p.246 / printed p.235; the copy garbles the digits of the 9,197,000 figure at this point, so the passage is not quoted verbatim).
- On those figures the uncultivable areas extend over a figure read in the copy as 4,545,440 dunums, against 4,545,000 computed from the Report’s stated total of 13,742,000 dunums; the conflict is held under Open questions on the source page, not resolved.
- The Report’s net difference between the Jewish figures and the Government estimate of 7,120,000 dunums is 1,382,000 dunums, after allowing for 695,000 dunums of forest the Government excluded and the Jewish figures included as cultivable (PDF p.246 / printed p.235).
