Summary

The Arab Liberation Army’s commander in the Galilee in Pappe’s account, later one of Syria’s rulers in the 1950s, who replaced Safad’s able defender Ihasn Qam Ulmaz with an incompetent officer and refused arms to the villagers of Ghuwayr.

Details

  • Shishakly, who was to become one of Syria’s rulers in the 1950s, replaced the charismatic Syrian officer Ihasn Qam Ulmaz as the volunteers’ commander at Safad at precisely the moment the town needed him most, putting one of the ALA’s more incompetent officers in his place (The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, PDF p.127).
  • At Ghuwayr, on the Tiberias-Safad highway, the mukhtar asked Shishakly as head of the ALA volunteers to help and suggested distributing arms to the villagers, but Shishakly refused; the village recruited fifty peasants with old hunting guns instead (The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, PDF p.138-139).
