Summary

Palestinian from Nabi Saleh in the West Bank who, in the opening scene of Invited to Witness — Solidarity Tourism across Occupied Palestine, had been arrested in December 2017 for slapping an Israeli soldier, sentenced to eight months in an Israeli prison and released in July 2018; she was eighteen at the summer 2019 delegation visit Kelly describes (Invited to Witness — Solidarity Tourism across Occupied Palestine, PDF p.18).

Details

  • After a lecture by her father Bassam Tamimi and a dinner hosted by the family, the thirty delegates circled Ahed Tamimi taking pictures and videos for social media and questioning her about prison conditions, finishing high school in prison and fame; a question about what she does for fun and what music she likes was ignored by the delegates, who returned to the interrogation (PDF p.18-19).
  • Kelly uses the scene to open her study of what solidarity tourists are invited to do in Palestine and of delegates’ disidentification with the category “tourist” (PDF p.19).
