Summary
Israeli Military Intelligence officer who invented the staged “Fedayeen” capture of 29 October 1956, in Appendix 8 of Peace, Peace, When There Is No Peace, quoted from his 1974 Hagana Archive interview via Eyal Kafkafi (Peace, Peace, When There Is No Peace, PDF p.552-553).
Details
- Dar dressed “two [of our] dark-skinned officers” as Fedayeen, put them in mud in Herzliya to look like Sinai sand, took them with machine-guns to the Jaffa police station, and had policemen present them at a press conference, fearing policemen might beat “my guys” with the usual prisoners’ reception (PDF p.552-553).
- The invented story was published in Lamerhav and Haaretz on 30 October 1956 as the capture of four Fedayeen sent from Gaza by the Egyptian military command, with wounded prisoners, weapons and a sabotaged well; Kafkafi comments: “That was the level of trustworthiness of the reporting to the Israeli public in the days of Operation Sinai” (PDF p.553-556).
