Summary

The Bard College centre directed by Kenneth S. Stern, which works to increase the serious study of human hatred and ways to combat it, and provides an academic home for the Nexus Document project (Written Testimony of Kenneth S. Stern, PDF p.1, p.24).

Details

  • Hate Studies is the centre’s field; Stern directs it in both his March 27, 2025 Senate testimony and the September 17, 2024 testimony reproduced as its Appendix A (PDF p.1, p.20).
  • A Bard faculty colleague involved with the centre, seeing students use contested terms after October 7, created the class on genocide, settler colonialism, Zionism and antisemitism described at PDF p.18; two Bard colleagues designed a similar deep-dive class described in Appendix A (PDF p.39, footnote 73).
  • The centre co-published a Community Guide for Opposing Hate with the Montana Human Rights Network and Western States Center, and a study on the economic costs of hate crimes by economist Michael Martell (PDF p.23, footnote 10).
  • The centre will be publishing a book tentatively entitled Simply Human: How to Understand and Combat Hate (PDF p.37, footnote 62).
