Summary
Collective of Jewish women artists from the San Francisco Bay Area whose murals in Palestine close the Alternative Museum exhibition discussed in Chapter 1 of Invited to Witness — Solidarity Tourism across Occupied Palestine (Invited to Witness — Solidarity Tourism across Occupied Palestine, PDF p.72-73).
Details
- It was founded at the start of the first intifada by Marlene Tobias, Dina Redman, Susan Greene and Miranda Bergman, who wanted to support Palestinian freedom struggles by supporting Palestinian artists (PDF p.73).
- Four members travelled to the West Bank, lived with a Palestinian family in a refugee camp in Ramallah, and in a collaborative effort with local Palestinian artists created six murals and taught art classes; the first mural was painted at the Popular Arts Center in Ramallah in 1989 (PDF p.72-73).
- After Oslo it evolved into an artist and activist collective, Art Forces, headed by Susan Greene, which continues to raise awareness about conditions in Occupied Palestine, including via delegations today (PDF p.73).
- Many of its projects were funded by the Middle East Children’s Alliance (PDF p.73).
