Summary

Formerly Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs and a Member of the Upper Chamber of the Swedish Riksdag, appointed to act as Chairman of the Wailing Wall Commission (Report of the Commission appointed by His Majesty’s Government in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, with the approval of the Council of the League of Nations, to determine the rights and claims of Moslems and Jews in connection with the Western or Wailing Wall at Jerusalem, line 300).

Details

  • He was one of the three members whose names the British Government notified to the League Secretary-General on 12 May 1930 and whose composition the League Council approved on 15 May 1930 (lines 298-306).
  • At the Commission’s opening meeting in Jerusalem he stated its aim as an impartial and, if possible, complete inquiry and a verdict based “wholly and solely on the Commissioners’ candid convictions upon the bearing of law and equity to the case in dispute” (line 316).
  • At the closing meeting he again emphasised to the parties that an agreed solution would be very much preferable to a verdict, and held the door open for proposals and agreements, a delay later extended to 8 October 1930 (line 334).
