Summary

General heading the military government in the administered areas whose January 1949 report, in Manna’s Chapter 4, records surprise searches in eleven Galilee villages and 1,038 people expelled beyond the borders (Nakba and Survival, PDF p.156).

Details

  • Shitrit complained that border-strip expulsion operations under General Avnir had gone on without his knowledge or consultation (Nakba and Survival, PDF p.110, as read in part 3).

  • Avnir’s report to the minister of defense and chief of staff quoted his 4 January 1949 discussion: orders were given to conduct surprise searches and check identities; operations in eleven villages expelled 1,038 people, 536 of them from Majd al-Krum (Nakba and Survival, PDF p.156).

  • Manna notes Avnir’s report on al-Bi’na (fifty-nine expelled) and Dayr al-Asad (eight expelled) conflicts in detail with the western Galilee intelligence officer’s 1 June 1949 report on the 6 January operations (Nakba and Survival, PDF p.157-158).

  • The report itself is reproduced in full as Appendix 5 (part 8): dated 10 February 1949, addressed from the Military Government of the Administered Areas, it records the January operations in eleven villages — 1,038 exiled beyond the borders, 20 transferred to a POW camp, 69 arrested for further interrogation and 128 moved to other villages — with the village table giving Majd al-Krum 536, Kabul 128, Tarshiha 90, al-Mujaydil 64 expelled and 128 moved, al-Bi’na 59, Farradiyya and Kufr ‘Inan 54, Shafa ‘Amr 42, Mi’lya 28, ‘Iblin 15, Saffuriyya 14 and Dayr al-Asad 8; operations were suspended for the northern reorganisation and resumed on 4 February 1949 (Nakba and Survival, PDF p.306-307).
