Summary

The Swedish representative on the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine and its Chairman, elected at the Committee’s second meeting at Lake Success on 2 June 1947, who presided over its work in Palestine, Beirut and Geneva through the signing of its report on 31 August 1947 (Report to the General Assembly (UNSCOP), lines 354-460).

Details

  • Sandstrom was named Sweden’s representative to the Special Committee, with Dr. Paul Mohn as alternate (Ch. I para. 20).
  • At the Committee’s second meeting he and Dr. Alberto Ulloa (Peru) were elected Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively (Ch. I para. 27).
  • On 16 June 1947, the day before the Committee’s seventh meeting in Jerusalem, he made an appeal by radio for the full cooperation of all parties; when the Arab Higher Committee’s refusal to cooperate was read at that meeting, the Committee took no formal action in part because the Chairman had already made that appeal, and its later letter of 8 July repeated the invitation as expressed by the Chairman in his broadcast of 16 June (Ch. I paras. 32-33).
  • At the forty-second meeting in Geneva, the Chairman and two members presented the suggestions for the Committee’s working programme for preparing the report, and a combined memorandum was adopted at the next meeting (Ch. I para. 73).
  • Sweden was one of the seven members voting at the forty-seventh meeting in favour of the principle of partition with economic union, and one of the four whose proposals in Sub-Committee 4 inspired the majority plan’s City of Jerusalem recommendations (Ch. I paras. 72, 75).
