Details
-
Fayez Abdullah Sayegh (b. 1922 – d. 1980) was born in Kharraba, Syria, where his father was a Presbyterian minister; he began studies at the American University of Beirut, moved to the US and earned a PhD in philosophy from Georgetown University in 1949, then taught at the American University of Beirut, Yale, Stanford and Macalester College (Zionist Colonialism in Palestine, PDF p.1 / printed p.206).
-
He published widely on the Arab world and the question of Palestine and became one of the foremost intellectuals and diplomats representing Palestine internationally, serving as Chargé d’Affaires of the Arab States Delegations’ Office at the United Nations (Zionist Colonialism in Palestine, PDF p.1 / printed p.206).
-
In 1965 he founded the Research Center of the Palestine Liberation Organization and served as a member of its Executive Committee, editing and cultivating the main intellectual output of the 1960s revolutionary period in the Palestinian national movement (Zionist Colonialism in Palestine, PDF p.1 / printed p.206).
-
The editors name as his most lasting legacy 10 November 1975, when, as a delegate of Kuwait, he jointly authored and presented United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3379, which determined Zionism as a form of racism and racial discrimination (Zionist Colonialism in Palestine, PDF p.1 / printed p.206).
-
Said’s Chapter Four notes cite Sayegh’s later article “The Camp David Agreement and the Palestine Problem”, Journal of Palestine Studies VIII, 2 (Winter 1979), p.40, in the notes sequence for the Camp David autonomy discussion; the distinguished Palestinian writer of the fraction formula Said quotes in that discussion (PDF p.233) is not named in Said’s text, and the notes do not fix the attribution to this article with certainty (see the source page’s Open questions) (The Question of Palestine, PDF p.273 / printed p.252).
