Summary
The United Nations specialized agency for food and agriculture which, in the United Nations Mediator’s progress report, made two officers available in September 1948 to survey the production picture of Palestine and the surrounding countries for the short-term refugee relief programme (Progress Report of the United Nations Mediator on Palestine, line 2529).
Details
- Its Director-General, immediately upon the Mediator’s request and in conjunction with Haffnawy Pasha, Director of its Near East Regional Office, agreed to make available two officers, Dr. Kirk and Professor Abbassy, to survey the situation from the point of view of the immediate and potential production picture of Palestine and the surrounding countries, having in mind the bad harvests of 1946 and 1947 in certain areas, the impossibility of collecting a normal harvest in 1948 owing to war and consequential damage and the disruption of labour, and the dislocation of the usual norms in those countries consequent upon the influx of great numbers of refugees (Progress Report of the United Nations Mediator on Palestine, line 2529). The report names the agency once, in Part Three, IV, as the “Food and Agricultural Organization” (as printed).
- The investigations were being undertaken in September 1948, as one of the specialized-agency studies on which the Mediator’s planned programme for September to December 1948 was to be based (Progress Report of the United Nations Mediator on Palestine, lines 2519, 2529).
