Summary

Amateur Dutch photographer (1881–1942), author of the two-volume La Palestine illustrée (1929, with subsequent editions in English, German and Dutch), whose photographs of Orthodoxy and Orthodox in Palestine and Jordan, 1921–1923, form Chapter 2 of ‘The House of the Priest’: A Palestinian Life (1885-1954) (PDF p.72).

Details

  • He travelled to Palestine at the beginning of the 1920s and died before completing his plan to produce further volumes of La Palestine illustrée; the majority of his photos were never published (PDF p.72).
  • The Scholten Photographic Collection, held at the Netherlands Institute for the Near East (NINO), Leiden University, had been undisclosed and was being digitised when the volume appeared; Chapter 2 presents only a few highlights of his photographs on Orthodoxy and Orthodox in Palestine — fourteen figures, from Arab Orthodox vendors in Jerusalem’s Old City to a Greek Orthodox hermit at Beit Hogla (PDF p.72-85).
