Summary

The December 1948 UN convention whose definition of Genocide — acts committed with “the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such” — Segal applies to Israel’s October 2023 assault on Gaza, holding that three of its five listed acts are being perpetrated there (A Textbook Case of Genocide, lines 72-74).

Details

  • Segal quotes the intent definition and lists the three acts he says Israel is currently perpetrating in Gaza: “1. Killing members of the group. 2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group. 3. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.” The piece does not name the remaining two of the five acts (lines 72, 74).
  • In Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights, Article II of the same 1948 convention is quoted for the siege of Gaza and the 2008-9 war, and Barghouti’s category is “acts of genocide, albeit slow” (PDF p.46, p.56). See Genocide for the accounts held side by side.
