Summary
An Israeli university that Barghouti presents as committing a colonial land grab: much of the 3,345 dunums confiscated from Palestinians in 1968 was given to it to expand its campus in occupied East Jerusalem (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights, PDF p.118-119).
Details
- Chapter 4 lists building campuses or dormitories in the occupied Palestinian territory among the academy’s forms of complicity, “as Hebrew University has done, for instance” (PDF p.101).
- The Palestinian Federation of Unions’ indictment to the Association of University Teachers: in 1968 the occupation authorities confiscated 3,345 dunums under the Land (Acquisition for Public Purpose) Ordinance 1943, published in Gazette no. 1425; a large part was given to the university; in 1973 the Israeli court ruled in favour of the university and the state (PDF p.118).
- Legal experts hold the deal illegal because East Jerusalem is occupied territory, and moving Israelis to work and live on the land violates Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention (PDF p.118-119).
