Summary

The coordinating body of Palestinian citizens in Israel, formed in the early 1980s out of the National Committee of Arab Mayors by Arab MKs, local government figures, union heads and civil society leaders (Stateless Citizenship (2013), PDF p.31-32).

Details

  • It developed out of the National Committee of Arab Mayors in Israel and was formed by Arab Members of Knesset, local government figures, union heads and leaders from civil society organizations (PDF p.31).

  • It organized political actions including protests against the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and a series of general strikes on national occasions, supporting the Palestinian struggle against the Zionist colonial project while itself responding to Israel’s policies of exclusion and discrimination against its Arab citizens, and brought a new sense of national unity to Palestinian political activism (PDF p.31-32).

  • In Chapter 2 of the same book, The Future Vision of the Palestinian-Arabs in Israel, formed under the Committee’s auspices, is named as the first of the three 2006-2007 ‘vision documents’, prepared in conjunction with Adalah’s Democratic Constitution and Mada al-Carmel’s Haifa Declaration and, with them, the first formal statements by collectives from the Palestinian community in Israel on their placement within Israeli society and politics (PDF p.99-100).
