Summary

Palestinian party founded in 1932 and headed by Auni Abd al-Hadi, which in Kanafani’s account grouped the intellectuals and the middle and petty bourgeoisie, and stood as the left pole of the national leadership against the National Defence Party on its right.

Details

  • The Independence Party is listed among the six groups that emerged after the dissolution of the Arab Executive Committee in August 1934: founded in 1932, with Auni Abd al-Hadi as its head, it included the intellectuals, the middle bourgeoisie and some sectors of the petty-bourgeoisie, which contributed to its left wing playing a special role (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.21 / printed p.40-41).
  • The British High Commissioner, Kanafani says, realised how great a role the Mufti could play while he was restricted to the position between the Defence Party on his right and the Independence Party (its left wing) and the young intellectuals’ movements on his left (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.24 / printed p.46-47).
  • Pressure on Amin al-Hussaini to abandon his moderate attitude in 1937 in fact came not from the left quarter the High Commissioner expected but from the middle cadre on the national committees and from dispossessed peasants and unemployed workers (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.24 / printed p.46-47).
