Details

  • Halper, its director, explains to tourists on ICAHD tours that uprooted ancient olive trees are replanted as status objects in settlements and in northern Tel Aviv: “it’s becoming very fashionable among the nouveau riche in northern Tel Aviv to have an olive tree” (PDF p.120).
  • On an ICAHD solidarity tour in the summer of 2012, nearing the perimeter of a settlement in East Jerusalem, the tour guide explained where the municipal services ended, showing tourists the manicured settlement grounds, trash pickup and working bus line, then the “edge” where the road and sidewalk abruptly became a dirt path, half joking in a nod to Shel Silverstein: “This is where the sidewalk ends” (PDF p.149).
