Summary
The Jewish city whose construction the Israeli government prepared, in Manna’s account, by decreeing 200,000 dunums of Arab land between al-Shaghur and al-Battuf a closed area — a step in the post-1956 Judaization of the Galilee alongside Upper Nazareth (Nakba and Survival, PDF p.294).
Details
- After beginning to build a Jewish city near Nazareth, the government decreed 200,000 dunums of Arab lands between al-Shaghur and al-Battuf a closed area, in the first step towards expropriating the land to build the city of Karmiel; the Jewish state and its governmental institutions thus became an essential partner in Zionist settlement after the Nakba (see Judaization) (Nakba and Survival, PDF p.294).
- The settlement drive poured fuel on the anger ignited by the Kafr Kassim massacre in 1956, and the communists were quickly drawn to the activist nationalists’ positions during 1957–58 (Nakba and Survival, PDF p.294).
