Summary
A Jewish settlement financing body named in the Jewish Agency’s July 1930 memorandum for its investments in the Valley of Esdraelon and for equipping settlements there until they became self-supporting (Palestine: Land Settlement, Urban Development and Immigration, PDF p.22-25).
Details
-
The memorandum lists the Keren Hayesod among the Jewish institutions that invested in the Valley of Esdraelon (including Afuleh), with its investment given as £P.605,551; the American Zion Commonwealth is listed at £P.406,008 in the same table, whose Jewish National Fund figure and total are garbled in the text copy (Palestine: Land Settlement, Urban Development and Immigration, PDF p.22).
-
Settlements in the Emek that received their full equipment from the Keren Hayesod are described as now self-supporting in the memorandum’s defined sense, while settlements that had not yet received their full settlement loan were mostly near that stage (PDF p.25).
-
In the October 1930 statement the Fund is named, in its English form Palestine Foundation Fund, as “the main financial instrument of the Jewish Agency”; colonisation financed from it is distinguished from the earlier P.I.C.A. colonisation, and its repayment agreements are recorded as binding Maritime Plain settlers to hire Jewish workmen only whenever they must hire help, with a similar provision in the Agreement for the Emek Colonies (Palestine: Statement of Policy by His Majesty’s Government in the United Kingdom, lines 293, 299).
