Summary

The national-religious party which Zionist Israel and the Question of Palestine presents in the Oslo endgame: hostile to the Oslo Peace Process through its adherence to the ideology of the “promised land”, and courted by Shimon Peres for his coalition shortly after Rabin’s assassination (Zionist Israel and the Question of Palestine, PDF p.189-190 / printed p.180-181).

Details

  • Peres attempted, shortly after Rabin’s assassination and before Oslo II’s implementation, to include Mafdal in his coalition; he promised its leaders not to vacate any settlements, but nevertheless failed to win it for his coalition (PDF p.189).
  • Publicist Jacob Jona ironically labelled this closing of ranks a “hysteric alliance”, alluding to the party-political so-called “historic alliance” between Mapai and Mafdal in the first three decades of Israeli policy, and criticized Peres’s lack of collegiality towards his “natural political allies” for peace, such as Meretz, Reform Judaism and the Israeli Palestinians (PDF p.190).
