Summary

A Black American leader whose internationalist outlook and writings on Palestine are treated at length in Chapter 9 of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction (Palestine: A Socialist Introduction, lines 1628-1655).

Details

  • He visited East Jerusalem briefly in 1959 and Gaza in 1964, and in his 1964 Egyptian Gazette article “Zionist Logic” wrote that European imperialists “wisely placed Israel where she could geographically divide the Arab world, infiltrate and sow the seed of dissension among African leaders and also divide the Africans against the Asians” (lines 1640-1655).
  • His autobiography mentions incidentally that the British helped “wrest Palestine away from the Arabs, the rightful owners” (lines 1645-1652).
  • The chapter notes that some of his commentary on Jews and Israel sees Jews as monolithic and has hints of antisemitic tropes regarding Jews, money and power, while his predominant frame on Palestine was anticolonialism and Third World nationalism (lines 1648-1658).
  • In 1957 he organized a meeting on decolonization with representatives of the governments of Egypt, Sudan, Ghana, Iraq and Morocco (lines 1635-1645).
