Details

  • Dayan in April 1969, as quoted by Said from Ha-Aretz, April 4, 1969: the Jews came to a country already populated by Arabs and established a Hebrew, that is a Jewish, state there; in considerable areas, about 6 percent of the total area, they bought the lands from the Arabs; Jewish villages were built in the place of Arab villages, whose names, and the geography books recording them, no longer exist; Nahalal, Dayan’s own village, arose in the place of Mahalul, and so on for Gevat, Sarid and Kefar Yehoshua, the village names as printed in the text copy (The Question of Palestine, PDF p.35 / printed p.14).

  • Said comments that even Dayan’s frank terminology is euphemistic: the Arab villages were destroyed systematically (The Question of Palestine, PDF p.35 / printed p.14).

  • In Chapter Four II, Said reports Dayan’s position on repatriation: the over 2 million Palestinians not from Gaza or the West Bank, who now live in exile, are expected, according to Dayan, to remain where they are (The Question of Palestine, PDF p.233 / printed p.212).

  • In Chapter Four IV, personalities like Moshe Dayan have been gesturing toward Syria and the PLO, but the chorus of protest in the United States and in Israel has been deafening, and such initiatives can continue indefinitely without significant change in the official Israeli position (The Question of Palestine, PDF p.257 / printed p.236).

  • In Pappe, Dayan was one of the legendary top-ranking officers of the future Jewish state’s army in the Consultancy, the group that prepared the plans for the ethnic cleansing and supervised its execution (The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, PDF p.27).

  • In Manna’s Chapter 4, Dayan tells a ruling Mapai meeting that Arabs were a “fifth column” and that the fate of “this population, which consists of 170,000 Arabs, in the country as still undecided,” hoping for an opportunity in the next few years to transfer them out of the land of Israel (Nakba and Survival, PDF p.181).
