Summary

Haifa University lecturer whose doctoral research on the Sinai War found the secret “Operation Fig” agreements in the French Air Force archives at Vincennes, in Yigal Sarna’s investigation reproduced as Appendix 4 of Peace, Peace, When There Is No Peace (Peace, Peace, When There Is No Peace, PDF p.524-525).

Details

  • Golani told Sarna there was “real fear” in 1955-56 “so real that it didn’t let the facts get in the way. There was no evidence that the Egyptians would attack” (PDF p.522).
  • He found the timing of the October 1956 war was French, and in winter 1991, during the Gulf War, the Vincennes archives were opened to him; the Sinai War files were filed under the “Algeria War”; for eight days he photographed the Fig agreements and sent the material to Israel nightly (PDF p.524-525).
  • His book There Will Be War in Summer was published by the Defence Ministry in 1997 with, a bracketed note in the appendix records, no mention of Operation Fig in the book (PDF p.530).
