Summary
Norman Bentwich, as Lahav presents him: Palestine’s first attorney general, later professor of international law at the Hebrew University and close to the Mandatory administration, uncle of Carmel Agranat and thus part of the Bentwich/Friedlaender network that opened Palestine’s intellectual community to Simon Agranat after his marriage (Judgment in Jerusalem: Chief Justice Simon Agranat and the Zionist Century, lines 810-860).
Details
- When Aaron Agranat raised a judgeship for Simon as Bentwich was escorted to Haifa harbour for a trip abroad, Bentwich instantly scribbled a note for Simon to pass to the high commissioner; Agranat stacked it in his files, offended in his self-dignity by protekstyah (favouritism), and applied two years later when a Haifa magistrate post opened (Judgment in Jerusalem: Chief Justice Simon Agranat and the Zionist Century, lines 945-975).
