Details
-
The PCC called for the unconditional return of the refugees to their homes, which the assassinated UN mediator, Count Folke Bernadotte, had demanded; its position became UN General Assembly Resolution 194, adopted on 11 December 1948 (The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, PDF p.222).
-
The PCC, mentioned by Pappe as replacing Count Bernadotte in the UN mediation efforts, convened a special session to investigate what happened in Dawaymeh on 28 October 1948; its report of 14 June 1949 was based mainly on the mukhtar Hassan Mahmoud Ihdeib’s testimony (The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, PDF p.230).
-
In Chapter 11 Pappe returns to the PCC at Lausanne in spring 1949: for the PCC, unconditional return of the Palestinian refugees was the basis for peace, together with a two-state solution dividing the country equally and the internationalisation of Jerusalem; the comprehensive approach was accepted by the US, UN, Arab world, Palestinians and Sharett, but deliberately torpedoed by Ben-Gurion and Abdullah (The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, PDF p.274).
