Summary
The Brazilian educator whose Pedagogy of the Oppressed supplies an epigraph to Barghouti’s Introduction and the opening quotation of his Conclusion (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights, PDF p.14, p.216).
Details
- The Conclusion opens by quoting Freire: “One of the gravest obstacles to the achievement of liberation is that oppressive reality absorbs those within it and thereby acts to submerge human beings’ consciousness. Functionally, oppression is domesticating. To no longer be prey to its force, one must emerge from it and turn upon it. This can be done only by means of the praxis: reflection and action upon the world in order to transform it.” Barghouti presents the Palestinian BDS campaign as that emergence, reflection and action (PDF p.216).
- In Chapter 7 Barghouti quotes Freire on violence: “Never in history has violence been initiated by the oppressed.” (PDF p.132)
- The Introduction’s notes cite the Continuum 2006 edition of Pedagogy of the Oppressed at page 50 for its epigraph, and Chapter 5’s notes cite the Herder and Herder 1972 edition for the Simone de Beauvoir passage quoted through Freire (Notes, PDF p.253, p.282).
