Summary
The only land crossing between Palestine and Egypt, whose opening and closure form the “Gaza test” of Chapter 6 of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction (Palestine: A Socialist Introduction, lines 1294-1312).
Details
- Under Mubarak Egypt tightened the crossing, and his complicity in Gaza’s isolation was perceived negatively by Egyptians and across the Arab world (lines 1294-1305).
- Under the 2005 Agreement on Movement and Access an average of 1,300 Palestinians travelled daily in and out of Gaza via Egypt between June and November 2005; after Hamas’s 2006 electoral victory the numbers dropped to less than two hundred a day in 2008 (lines 1298-1302).
- After Mubarak’s fall the numbers reached a thousand travellers a day (lines 1301-1310).
