Summary

A Sea of Galilee town with a normal-times population of 3,660 in the 1948 Intelligence Service (Arab Section) report, named among the fallen centres — Tiberias, Safed, Samakh, Jaffa, Haifa and Acre — whose fall produced many large migration waves (The Emigration of the Arabs of Palestine in the Period 1/12/1947-1/6/1948, PDF p.5, 15).

Details

  • The annex records staged departures: on 1.2.48 a partial evacuation under tension, mostly of the wealthy, women and children, with 50% gone before the complete evacuation; on 15.4 a full evacuation in fear at the news of the action in Tiberias; on 21.4 a further partial evacuation by “our attack”; and on 28.4 a full evacuation on the occupation of the police, to Hamah and Transjordan (PDF p.15-16).
  • Its fall is the stated cause of further evacuations nearby, among them Majdal and Kafr Sabt on 22.4 and a-Tabigha on 1.5 (PDF p.16).
  • The report lists Samakh among the Sea of Galilee district’s absorption centres only “until it fell” (PDF p.9).
