Summary

A bookstore and publishing house in Gaza City, open from 1999 near Gaza’s three main universities, destroyed by Israeli warplanes on May 18, 2021 (Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire, PDF p.203-204).

Details

  • Mosab Abu Toha describes it as one of Gaza’s rare cultural resources and one of very few publishers in Gaza; two of his friends’ latest books, about five hundred copies each still in the store awaiting signing, were irrevocably damaged in the bombing (PDF p.203-204).
  • The building also housed the Iqra’ bookstore, whose owner Shaaban Isleem said, “The store was all I had in my life. My wife and I sold her gold to keep it going and develop it. Now all is gone.” (PDF p.204).
  • A photograph of a man holding a book amid the bookstore’s ruins appears at PDF p.173 (photo Sameh Rahmi).
