Summary

Israel’s internal security service, whose illegal execution of two captured Bus Line 300 hijackers in April 1984 and cover-up of that order stand at the centre of the Shin Bet Affair as Zionist Israel and the Question of Palestine reconstructs it (PDF p.86-96).

Details

  • In Amar-Dahl’s account the service’s chief Avraham Shalom ordered the illegal execution of two captured Palestinian hijackers on April 12, 1984, inserted his own man Yossi Genossar into the Zorea commission investigating the deaths, misled two investigative commissions, and framed Brigadier General Yitzhak Mordechai, who was acquitted after a seven-minute hearing on August 18, 1985 (PDF p.88-89).
  • Three senior members — Reuven Hazak, Rafi Malka and Peleg Radai — broke with Shalom on the ground “that the service’s tradition of honest reporting was crucial to the Shin Bet’s efficient functioning both internally and externally in its relations with the Ministry of Justice and the courts” (PDF p.89).
  • Prime Minister Shimon Peres treated the service as almost sacral and untouchable, its people acting “in a legal gray area” and requiring his protection from investigation and trial (PDF p.90-92).
