Details
- The Framework for the Conclusion of a Peace Treaty fixed the governing terms: withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from the Sinai, at most one Egyptian division within about 50 km east of the Gulf of Suez and the Suez Canal, UN forces near the Mediterranean and in the Sharm el-Sheikh area, and an interim withdrawal, between three and nine months after the treaty’s signing, east of a line from east of El-Arish to Ras Muhammad (Camp David Accords: A Framework for Peace in the Middle East; Framework for the Conclusion of a Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel (17 September 1978), lines 1-186).
- The treaty sets the timetable: interim withdrawal within nine months of exchange of ratification instruments and final withdrawal within three years, through five subphases ending with the areas east of the Giddi and Mitla passes, with force ceilings by zone (Zone A one Egyptian division of up to 22,000 personnel; Zone B four border battalions; Zone C UN forces and Egyptian civil police only; Zone D, on the Israeli side, four infantry battalions) (Treaty of Peace between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Israel (26 March 1979), Annex I and Appendix).
- Israeli-left airfields near El-Arish, Rafah, Ras en-Naqb (Ras El-Nagb) and Sharm el-Sheikh are for civilian purposes only under both instruments (framework, lines 1-186; treaty, Annex III Article 6).
