Summary

The political framework created by Hashomer Hatza’ir in 1936 within which Jews who agreed with its politics but were not current or potential kibbutz members could organise themselves (Comrades and Enemies: Arab and Jewish Workers in Palestine, 1906-1948, lines 1982-1984).

Details

  • Its creation institutionalised Hashomer Hatza’ir’s urban presence and helped enhance the movement’s status as the main opposition to Mapai within urban workplaces and the Histadrut at large (Comrades and Enemies: Arab and Jewish Workers in Palestine, 1906-1948, lines 1982-1984).
  • In the summer 1939 elections to the railway union’s eighth congress, Hashomer Hatza’ir and its ally the Socialist League came within three votes (of 105 cast) of MAPAI in the Haifa branch and won a solid majority in the workshops (lines 1990-1992).
