Summary

Executive Secretary of SNCC elected at its annual staff meeting in early May 1967, as reported in the June-July 1967 SNCC Newsletter (Third World Round Up: The Palestine Problem: Test Your Knowledge — SNCC Newsletter Vol. I, No. 4 (June-July 1967), PDF p.8).

Details

  • The biography on PDF p.8 gives him as 24, an old-timer in SNCC dating back to his days at Howard University, where he once served as President of the Nonviolent Action Group (NAG), from which came many of the first “shock troops” of the “Movement”; born in Charlotte, North Carolina, he has seen action in Cambridge, Maryland, and Virginia, and served as SNCC Campus Traveler and Organizational Secretary (PDF p.8).
  • A Stanley Wise is also named on PDF p.6 among the nine persons arrested at the Hauser home in Prattville, Alabama; the issue does not say in either place whether the two mentions are the same person, and they are recorded as they stand (PDF p.6, p.8).
  • With the other new officers, at a press conference held right after the staff meeting he outlined SNCC’s policies: a human rights organization supporting liberation struggles worldwide, a nation-wide Black Anti-Draft Program, and National Freedom Organizations as the major thrust (PDF p.8).
