Summary
Founder of Revisionist Zionism whose 1923 essay “The Iron Wall” Makdisi quotes at length at the end of his Introduction as the open early statement of the programme the book traces (Palestine Inside Out: An Everyday Occupation, PDF p.52-53).
Details
- “Zionist colonization, even the most restricted, must either be terminated or carried out in defiance of the will of the native population. This colonization can, therefore, continue and develop only under the protection of a force independent of the local population—an iron wall which the native population cannot break through.” (quoted PDF p.53)
- Makdisi: for Jabotinsky the iron wall was a metaphor; Israel has since built actual walls of concrete and steel, and the policy outlined in 1923 “has become reality in 2008” (PDF p.53).
