Summary

Brigadier-General William E. Riley, U.S.M.C., Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization, to whom the two letters joined to the Syrian-Israeli General Armistice Agreement are addressed by the heads of the Israeli and Syrian delegations (Syrian-Israeli General Armistice Agreement, PDF p.12-13).

Details

  • As Chief of Staff he is the office-holder whose office chairs the Syria-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission under Article VII, paragraph 1 — the Chairman is the Chief of Staff or a senior officer from the Truce Supervision Organization’s observer personnel designated by him after consultation with both Parties — and who convenes the Commission’s first meeting within one week of signing (Article VII, paragraphs 1 and 3, PDF p.7).
  • The two joined letters, from Sgan Aloof M. Makleff for the Israeli delegation and Colonel Fozi Selo for the Syrian delegation, each confirm to Riley that the two Parties are agreed that their forces shall not advance beyond the existing truce lines as certified by the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization, and that in the Samakh area Israeli troops shall be stationed in the Samakh Police Station, Sha’ar Hag Golan and Massada only (PDF p.12-13).
  • The Agreement was done in the presence of the United Nations Chief of Staff of the Truce Supervision Organization, the office Riley held as the letters name it (signature block, PDF p.9).
