Details

  • Yaqub al-Hanna was, like Khoury, a nationalist member of the Orthodox Church; the two were involved in organising a 1934 conference of nationalist Orthodox Palestinians chaired by Shehadeh Khoury (editors’ note, PDF p.154).

  • After Khoury’s father’s death in Birzeit in July 1934, al-Hanna was among the priests who came from Ramla, and delivered one of the eulogies (PDF p.124).

  • In §43 Khoury recounts that the rebels kidnapped Father Yaqub Al-Hanna with three of his brothers and three of his cousins and almost killed them because of Bishop Hajjar’s denunciation of them; Khoury went north, saved him from the pit of water they had put him in, and went to Lebanon to mediate with the Mufti to release his entire group (PDF p.154).

  • At Khoury’s Silver Jubilee in Wadi Shahrour on 2nd February 1952, Father Yaqub Al-Hanna delivered a speech (‘The House of the Priest’: A Palestinian Life (1885-1954), PDF p.181).
