Summary
General Sir Edmund Allenby, whose assurance to the Amir Faisal of October 1918 is printed as Annex H of the 1939 committee report on the McMahon–Hussein correspondence (Report of a Committee set up to consider certain correspondence between Sir Henry McMahon and the Sharif of Mecca, lines 771-777).
Details
- Allenby reported to His Majesty’s Government on 19 October 1918 (“l9th October” as printed) the assurance he had given the Amir Faisal: whatever measures might be taken during the period of military administration were purely provisional and could not be allowed to prejudice the final settlement by the peace conference, at which no doubt the Arabs would have a representative; his instructions to the military governors would preclude their mixing in political affairs, and he would remove any who contravened those orders; and “the Allies were in honour bound to endeavour to reach a settlement in accordance with the wishes of the peoples concerned” (lines 771-777).
- The assurance is one of the subsequent statements the committee considered for light on the correspondence; the committee expressed no opinion on its interpretation, while holding such statements evidentiary of the responsibilities in its para. 22 (lines 277-290).
