Summary
Palestinian figure chosen by the Mufti, with Niqula Khoury, to form the Orthodox delegation to the Balkans in 1937 against partition (‘The House of the Priest’: A Palestinian Life (1885-1954), PDF p.131).
Details
- The Mufti called on Khoury to take up the Balkan task along with Emile Al-Ghouri; Yaqub Farraj declared it enough to send the two alone and promised community fundraising, which in Khoury’s account Farraj then sabotaged, so the delegation left Jerusalem on 1st September 1937 with only 70 pounds (PDF p.131).
- Al-Ghouri travelled with Khoury through Damascus, Aleppo, Istanbul, Sofia, Bucharest, Belgrade and Geneva, and on to Athens and Egypt (PDF p.132-153).
- After about two weeks in Cairo, Khoury returned to Palestine alone while Emile Al-Ghouri stayed in Egypt with his family (PDF p.153).
