Summary

The Palestine Arab Workers Society (PAWS) secretary, brother of ‘Abd al-Hamid Haymur, who had worked in the Palestine Railways wagonage department (Comrades and Enemies: Arab and Jewish Workers in Palestine, 1906-1948, lines 1570, 1848).

Details

  • His lengthy article in Filastin, June 4, 1926, “The Indigenous Workers between Zionism and Communism”, portrayed the Arab railway union as the target of incessant efforts to undermine it by both the “Zionist union” and the Jewish communists; Lockman finds some allegations plausible and others far-fetched, and records his complaint that the PAWS had no more than ninety members a year or so after its formation (Comrades and Enemies: Arab and Jewish Workers in Palestine, 1906-1948, lines 1848-1850).
  • In summer 1927 he and ‘Ali al-Batal greeted the Jewish-led union’s sixth congress on behalf of the PAWS; in 1934 he co-led the joint committee with the IU’s Michael Dana, and in May 1934 he proposed a merger of the two unions; he was one of the four Arab delegates who met the High Commissioner in Jerusalem on June 17, 1935 (lines 1872, 1914-1928).
