Summary
Jerusalem-born Palestinian whose 2011 release from Israeli prison into exile in Gaza is the centre of Shahd Abusalama’s chapter in Light in Gaza (Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire, PDF p.48-50).
Details
- Born in Jerusalem in September 1978, Louay was detained during the Second Intifada and spent ten years in Israeli jails (Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire, PDF p.48, p.51).
- On October 18, 2011 — his “second birthday” — he was freed in the exchange of Gilad Shalit for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners, but designated to exile in Gaza, among 164 freed prisoners so destined, though he had no family there (Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire, PDF p.48).
- His uncle Yacoub Odeh had been a fellow prisoner of Abusalama’s father Ismail in Beersheba (1974) and Nafha (1980), and was freed in the 1985 swap; the families reunited in Gaza in 2011 (Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire, PDF p.49).
- A decade later Louay was in Europe, among the many of Abusalama’s Gaza circle dispersed there (Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire, PDF p.51).
