Summary
President of the Federation of Arab Workers in Jaffa, assassinated by the Mufti’s group in the early 1930s; for Kanafani his killing is the early proof that the Feudal-Clerical Leadership could not tolerate an independent Arab labour movement.
Details
- The Palestinian feudal-religious leadership terrorised the independent Arab labour movement: in the early thirties the Mufti’s group assassinated Michel Mitri, president of the Federation of Arab Workers in Jaffa (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.9 / printed p.17).
- Kanafani returns to the killing at the essay’s close, recalling Mitri as a unionist who had played an important role in mobilising Arab workers before the outbreak of the troubles in 1936, and pairing his assassination with that of Sami Taha in 1947 (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.31 / printed p.60-61).
