Summary
Haifa trade unionist, president of the Federation of Arab Workers in Haifa, whose assassination Kanafani bookends his essay with: paired with Michel Mitri’s killing as the Feudal-Clerical Leadership’s terror against the independent Arab labour movement, and dated, by the Mufti’s men, to 12 September 1947.
Details
- Years after the Mufti’s group assassinated Michel Mitri in Jaffa in the early 1930s, Sami Taha, a trade unionist and president of the Federation of Arab Workers in Haifa, was likewise assassinated (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.9 / printed p.17).
- At the essay’s close Kanafani gives the killing a date and an agent: the Mufti’s men assassinated the trade unionist leader Sami Taha in Haifa on 12 September 1947, an instance of the defeated leadership’s repression of the communist left (The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine, PDF p.31 / printed p.60-61).
