Summary

Special Amendment No. 6 (2009) to the Regional Councils Law, granting the Interior Minister power to postpone a new regional council’s first election indefinitely, in a Description-only entry in Discriminatory Laws Database (lines 2034-2078).

Details

  • The law previously required elections within four years; it was passed shortly before elections were due to the Abu Basma Regional Council, leaving a government-appointed council with a majority of Israeli Jewish members in place (lines 2046-2054).
  • The Supreme Court ordered at a February 2011 hearing that Abu Basma elections be held no later than 4 December 2012; in October 2012 the government split the council into two, delaying elections again, in HCJ 3183/10 (lines 2056-2078).
