Details
- In Atlanta, Carmichael, Donald Stone and Ernest Stephens, all field secretaries for SNCC and residents of Dixie Hills, stopped on Sunday June 18, 1967 to see if arrested people needed legal help, gathered with young people, and were arrested after police called Carmichael an agitator and ordered him to move on; the report says police claimed Carmichael’s presence any place is enough to incite a riot (PDF p.3).
- Carmichael spoke, out of jail on bond, at Monday community meetings in Dixie Hills demanding Black control of their own communities and an end to white economic exploitation in the Dixie Hills Shopping Center (PDF p.3).
- On Thursday, June 22, Judge T.C. Little sentenced Carmichael, Stone, Stephens and one other local resident to 50 days in jail or a 1,000 for each (PDF p.3).
- In Prattville, Alabama, on Sunday, June 11, 1967, former SNCC Chairman Stokely Carmichael was arrested by white patrolman Kenny Hill on a disorderly conduct charge after calling out a slogan printed as Black Lower to friends at a meeting; the Atlanta SNCC office was swamped with press calls investigating a report that Carmichael had been killed, and he was learned to be safe only when he appeared for the preliminary hearing (PDF p.6).
- As an aftermath of the Roxbury rebellion, Carmichael, former chairman of SNCC, was invited by the Roxbury Peoples Movement to speak at a rally on Sunday, June 25, 1967; Boston’s Acting Mayor Barry Hynes telegraphed the sponsors that Carmichael was a known agitator from outside the city whose past experiences had often been followed by bloodshed and property damage (PDF p.7).
