Summary

The name the June-July 1967 SNCC Newsletter gives the five young Black Texas Southern University students and SNCC members charged with the murder of Houston patrolman Louis Kuba, for whose defence it asks readers to demonstrate and send money (Third World Round Up: The Palestine Problem: Test Your Knowledge — SNCC Newsletter Vol. I, No. 4 (June-July 1967), PDF p.2).

Details

  • The five, as named and aged on PDF p.2: John Parker, 20; Trazawell Franklin Jr., 20; Charles Freeman, 18; Floyd Nichols, 25; Douglas Wayne Waller, 21 (PDF p.2).
  • A grand jury indicted the five on June 3, 1967 for the murder of rookie cop Louis Kuba; the newsletter says the facts indicate the guilt of the Houston Police Force and the innocence of the five, that Kuba was probably killed by his fellow officers’ wild fire, that Houston’s D.A. will ask for the death penalty, and that the trial is scheduled for July 25 (PDF p.2).
  • The What You Can Do box calls for protest demonstrations in support of the TSU FIVE and money sent to the Houston Defense in Action Fund, Box 14004, Houston 77021, to help defend them (PDF p.2).
  • Carolyn Baker’s editorial says the five have been prejudged, as have all TSU students, by the white powers of Houston (PDF p.2).
