Summary

The archive of Hashomer Hatzair and the United Workers Party (MAPAM) in Givat Haviva, whose catalogue annotations — “deposited in the vault per instructions of State Archive declassifiers” — are the Akevot Institute for Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Research report’s opening evidence of DSDE concealment (Silencing: DSDE’s Concealment of Documents in Archives, PDF p.1, 4).

Details

  • Its online catalogue annotates the 1948 “Migration of Eretz Yisrael Arabs” document: “Booklet stored in vault […]. Not to be provided to researchers (Order of State Archive, June 2004)” (PDF p.1).
  • A DSDE team instructed that the copy in Aharon Cohen’s collection remain in the vault on June 20, 2004; an identical copy in Yosef Vashitz’ collection at the same archive, file (3)35.27-95, was found by Akevot, cleared by the Israeli Military Censor, and posted with the report (PDF p.10).
  • The 1948 Intelligence Service (Arab Section) report’s original record is held here, file 95-35.27(3) (The Emigration of the Arabs of Palestine in the Period 1/12/1947-1/6/1948, PDF p.1).
  • In 1986 its director, Pnina Doron, was pressed by Chief State Archivist Avraham Alsberg to close records discreetly after Benny Morris published from the Cohen collection; she closed that collection until further notice and vaulted some of its documents (PDF p.7).
  • In May 2015 Dr. Tamar Novick found the Galili briefing notes Morris had quoted from Cohen’s files were in “the vault” and could not see them (PDF p.6).
  • Representatives of the DSDE, the ISA and the IDF Archive met its directors in mid-2002 in the series that formalized the screening operations; its meeting minutes are dated July 17, 2002 (PDF p.8).
