Details

  • Over nine weeks in 1959-60 the ADL found some 643 anti-Semitic incidents in the United States, in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco and at least eighteen other cities; of 167 apprehended offenders most were aged thirteen to eighteen (line 245).
  • Its general counsel Arnold Forster called SNCC’s 1967 article a “tragedy” degrading the civil rights movement “by the injection of hatred and racism in reverse,” and another ADL official said the newsletter “follows the pro-Arab, Soviet and racist lines and smacks very heavily of anti-Semitism” (line 439).
  • Forster and Epstein’s The New Anti-Semitism opens Feldman’s chapter 3: “Anti-Semitism is an insidious disease. It can linger in the body politic almost invisibly for years without erupting” (line 581).
